“We see our involvement with YOVASO as a way to encourage and impact young people.”
-Kenneth Bumgarner, Retired President, VSPA

Virginia State Police Association:

YOVASO is pleased to have the Virginia State Police Association (VSPA) as its official sponsor. With more than 2,000 troopers and retired troopers as members, the VSPA has a wealth of resources to assist YOVASO in its efforts to expand statewide. Troopers are already involved with YOVASO clubs at many schools and their experience and expertise with traffic safety make those clubs some of the strongest in the state.

VSPA became the official sponsor of YOVASO on August 1, 2007 when it was awarded the YOVASO Grant by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. VSPA had already been active with YOVASO for several years and was a frequent financial contributor to many of its programs, including the leadership retreats and annual awards banquets. VSPA President Kenneth Bumgarner said this new partnership with YOVASO will help fulfill the Association’s goal of giving back to the community.

“As troopers, our members see young people being killed in traffic crashes every day and we believe the YOVASO Organization has a chance to make a real impact,” Bumgarner explained. “We are already involved in the enforcement role, but we want to play a bigger role and we see our involvement in YOVASO as a way to encourage and impact young people.”

VSPA was founded in 1974 and is the only association in the state representing members of the Virginia State Police. Its motto is “To be mutually helpful to one another.” VSPA helps its members through scholarships, retirement grants and emergency relief funds. Its scope has also widened to include giving to school and community programs across the commonwealth. Since its inception, the Virginia State Police Association has become an honored and professional organization and is now providing services and benefits far exceeding all previous expectations.
